Why Write Your Autobiography?
- By writing, we communicate not only with others, but also with ourselves. It has been said that we do not really know what we think we really know until we put our thoughts on paper.
- By writing, we elevate the awareness of life itself.
- By writing, we can understand more clearly what our scriptural forefathers and foremothers meant when they questioned from where we have come, where we are going, and to whom we have to answer – all the very basics of life.
- By writing, we can better remember everyday as well as special moments, and realize how fortunate we are to live and to love and to laugh with friends who are here on this earth at the same time and in the same place as ourselves.
- By writing, we can say that words have power – enough power at times that written remembrances can enable you to smell the roses in December.
- And by writing, we can, like the lyricist’s songs, open our deepest hearts to life’s struggles, engage our enquiring mind, start our feet a-dancing, note the beauty around us, and dream the impossible dream.
Through the written word, we can reflect on the very serious phrase, “How I survived.”
The journey within oneself can be compared to having a gold mine. The catch is that it is of no use unless it is worked. There is gold within you: who you are, what you believe, and the concepts you value. You are a bank of ethical values, certainly just as valuable, or more so, than the things of material value that you possess.
What vast riches of talents and ideas lie buried and long-forgotten, unknown assets of the more than 30 billion people who have lived and died? What will our loved ones really know about us? The things you treasure while living - your hopes and stories, your feelings and beliefs - should be passed on. The values you live by are the stuff that make you “you”.
